God’s calling on our lives is found when we take the time to pray. Throughout my life, I have faced so many hardships. I have also faced times when I had two paths in front of me and I had to choose one. There have also been times when the only fix to a situation lay in the hands of someone other than me.
It is in these times that I go to Jesus Christ, the Son of God and he reminds me that prayer never fails.
When we pray the Holy Spirit releases the power of God into our lives. Even Paul the great apostle of Christ knew that he would only have success through the power of prayer. We need to be reminded of this often.
I help my family be reminded of this by choosing movies, or TV shows for our family that show the power of prayer. There are so many great Christian movies today available on streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, or Pure Flix.
Because of the success of these movies, we have even seen some of the best movies with Christian values make it to the box office… and be successful! Here is a list of the best Christian movies that show the power of prayer.
Breakthrough
It was a year ago our community was rocked when a ten-year-old boy went missing. After 24 hours of searching his body was found, he had fallen into the river, hit his head, and died. I had met the family a few times, and seeing the mother’s pain was something that I will never forget. There is nothing worse than losing a child. We had all been praying that the boy would be found.
When I watched the movie Breakthrough last week, my mind was brought back to that horrific weekend.
This is a Christian film that provides some insight into why God intercedes for certain people but not others. The story of Breakthrough is excellent and superbly crafted. Chrissy Metz is fantastic in her role as the mother. This film should not be missed. You’ll both laugh and cry over it.
In this Faith-Based Film, you meet a mother of an adopted boy who faces the unthinkable family tragedy when her young boy falls through the ice and is declared dead. But she refuses to give up hope and turns to the power of God and prayer as her only way of help.
I am an adoptive parent and I appreciate the way adoption is handled in this movie. However, if you are an adoptive parent you might want to watch the movie ahead of time to make sure your child is ready to watch.
The Case for Christ (2017)
I grew up knowing the name Lee Strobel. He is a Christian writer and speaker. I had his books in my home growing up. We hosted a Bible Study in our home last Christmas where we watched his latest series A Case for Christmas. I was very excited in 2017 when the movie A Case of Christ came out, telling his story.
This faith-based film is Based on the true story of an acclaimed atheist investigative journalist who uses his well-honed legal and journalistic abilities to refute his wife’s conversion to Christianity, with surprising and life-altering outcomes.
While he is researching his wife is praying. She knows the only way to reach her husband is through prayer. We also see the effects of an abusive father on young children, and we see the rescue of a family.
Soul Surfer
This true story of an award-winning surfer, Bethan Hamilton is a favorite movie in my house. My girls have seen it so many times, and they also have the books written by Bethan Hamilton and follow her on social media. This is why I love to give my children true stories to watch because they can then have a real-life person to look to for examples of the faith.
This is a story of a young girl who survives a shark attack. In the wake of her dramatic rescue, we see her mother and father as they pray for grace. Grace their daughter will live, and then grace for them as parents as they navigate her new life after her near-death experience.
Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, and Anna Sophia Robb all have amazing performances in this film.
The Perfect Wave
This is an example of another true story that revolves around surfing. If your family loved Soul Surfer, they would also love this story of New Zealand surfer Ian McCormack.
This is the story of his childhood and his life growing up as a surfer. Ian and his friend are in search of the perfect wave, and the two go on an adventure that changes their lives in a huge way. Both Soul Surfer and The Perfect Wave do great jobs showing the professional success of surfers who found their strength in prayer and the power of God.
The Girl Who Believes in Miracles
In my own life, I need the reminder that anything is possible. Life’s challenges can get overwhelming at times. I have older children, so most of the movies we watch are for a more mature audience. However, I have nieces and nephews that are younger, and my sisters-in-law are always looking for options for their family. This is one that I recommend.
This movie is an inspiring movie that tells the story of a little girl living in a small town who is suddenly given the ability to work miracles through her Christian faith is told in this family-friendly movie.
However, when the girl becomes ill, she too will require a miracle. This feature film has a strong Christian perspective and is amusing, well-acted, motivating, and poignant. It emphasizes the value of miracles and family during trying times and will bring your family members on a spiritual journey as it reminds them that anything is possible through trust in God.
War Room
This is my favorite movie made by the Kendrick brothers. My life was changed by this movie, and my prayer life was changed forever by this film. If you want your prayer life to be changed and developed this movie is a great place to start.
This is one of the best black Christian movies and tells the story of a spiritual battle with a gripping plot about a troubled married couple. Inside the dream house, and dream job Elizabeth Jordan’s world is crushed when she learns of her husband Tony’s hidden struggles, and a wife who feels there is no hope. Then she meets Miss Clara who helps her learn about the power of prayer.
The Kendrick Brothers did a fantastic job of making the subject of prayer entertaining.
The Prayer (2018)
This is a movie in French with English subtitles.
This is a movie about the Catholic Faith and addiction. Although the movie is more about addiction than the Catholic faith. This is not a movie for younger viewers. However, if you want to see what life is like for people facing addiction this is a good movie for that.
Thomas is a drug user. This young man joins a group of ex-addicts who live alone in the mountains and use prayer to heal themselves in an effort to kick his habit. In this church community, he learns more about life choices and finds the ultimate hope for recovery.
A Man Called Peter
This God movie tells the story of a champion of the faith, Peter Marshall. A lot of people have lost faith in our government. That makes sense. The truth is the only way we can find peace in this country is to send a missionary to the ultimate mission field… the U.S. Senate.
This is the story of Peter who became a clergyman and U. S. Senate chaplain. In this movie, we see what can happen if a man of God is willing to stand for Jesus Christ in the hardest mission field. The US government.
God’s Not Dead: A Light in Darkness (2018)
There are a few movies in the God’s Not Dead series. The whole series is a good example of family movies. Our family has watched every one of the movies in this series. We love them all.
This is a great one to watch if you want to be reminded about the power of prayer. In this movie, we see Christian faith on display.
In this movie, we see Pastor Dave as he responds with unconditional love to the unimaginable tragedy of having his church, located on the grounds of the local university, burned down.
The Prayer Box
God is not a genie in a box. We don’t demand things and he gives them to us. That is not how prayer works. The truth is that prayer changes us, more than it changes the circumstance around us. That is a hard lesson to learn.
The charming Christian film is about a 13-year-old boy named Wesley whose prayers don’t go as he desires, so he takes matters into his own hands and serves as a good Samaritan for his church by responding to their prayers in the hopes that God will take note of his efforts and heal his sister of cancer.
In this Christian film, we see the true love of a brother for his sister. This is a touching, and motivational family film that shows how God moves in His own timing and methods.
Miracles From Heaven
I was so happy to this movie and went with a group of mom friends to the theater to watch it. We were all crying by the time the movie ended.
Jennifer Garner stars in this Christian film that was a huge success at the box office. In this movie, we see the true story of a mother whose life takes an unexpected turn with her 10-year-old daughter Anna is diagnosed with an incurable disease. We see her praying and seeking God’s face as she watches her beautiful daughter in pain.
Then a freak accident changes everything!
This is a powerful story of prayer, and your family will love it.
Do you Believe?
Sometimes we can think that a pastor is not on a journey of faith, that he has finished his journey. But the truth is that our pastors are also walking on a path to learn more about God.
In this Christian film, a pastor has an incredible journey of faith when he is reminded that true belief always necessitates action when he is moved by the demonstrative faith of a street corner preacher.
Once This pastor begins to put his faith into action it starts a domino effect, and his spiritual journey has an effect on everyone it encounters in ways that only God could plan. This movie shows in a creative way that our personal choices affect others in a big way.
Saved By Grace
Joey Lawrence is one of my favorite actors. I still hear him say Woe on Blossom as a teenager every time I see him. He stars in this movie and is great! This movie has the feel of a Christmas movie “Wonderful Life.”
Joey Lawrence plays a former police officer who has lost his family and is considering making a drastic move that would alter his life forever when he meets a mystery young woman. This young lady begins to share her personal stories with him and slowly his heart is opened to Grace.
Prayer Never Fails
It was June 27th of 2022 when the supreme court of the USA ruled 6-3 that a Washington State Coach had the right to pray at the 50-yard line. That right to pray was a constitutional right. There are a lot of people that did not agree with this ruling. Today there are many people who don’t want Christians praying in public.
This story has great relevance in today’s world. In this Christian film, we see a high school football coach who prays for a young man on his football team. This leads to him being fired.
But remember Prayer never fails! And in this movie, we see the coach fight for his right to pray, the movie shows his fight through the court system.
I Still Believe
You can’t have a list of movies about prayer without talking about I Still Believe. The most impactful true story of Jeremy Camp. Before his successful career as a Christian singer, he was a college student in love. But when the love of his life is diagnosed with cancer he begins to pray.
What we see in this movie is that it is easy to believe in God when things go well. When God answers our prayers. When miracles happen. But can you still Believe when the miracle doesn’t come?
This is the question asked in this movie.
