The holiday season is my favorite time of year. The true meaning of Christmas is the story of the king of the universe coming to earth to be our savior. This is the Christmas story, the birth of Jesus Christ. This time of year, you will find my house decorated.
I go a little over the top. My home is the heart of Christmas. I not only have a Christmas tree, I have five. Yes, I love Christmas that much. I have the Christmas spirit! Last Christmas I watched every hallmark movie that was available on the Streaming services.
I watched them all before the month of December. I am always looking for a faith-based film that shows the Christmas spirit.
Here is a list of the best Christian Christmas movies you and your family need to see.
The Nativity Story
If you are going to watch a Christian film at Christmas, you have to start with the true story of the birth of Christ. During the months of November and December, we watch a Christmas movie each Friday night. Of course, we start with the story of the first Christmas.
In this breathtaking movie, we see God’s love for humanity. This is the first love story ever written! The circumstances leading up to the birth of Jesus are accurately described in “The Nativity Story” in the Bible. Author Mike Rich successfully uses subtle humor in his writing.
This story of Jesus’ birth is a story your family should watch to make sure you remember the true meaning of the Christmas season.
I Heard the Bells
This is a new faith-based film. It came out last year. I love history, and I love hymns and I love Christmas, so a historical drama about the Christmas hymn I heard the bells on Christmas day is basically the perfect movie.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is America’s Poet. In this movie, we see that he was living a happy life, until tragedy. First, his wife is killed in a freak accident, and then his country is torn apart by the civil war. Then his son joins the army.
Henry puts down his pen, silenced by sadness, as the Civil War tears apart his family and divides the nation. But hearing the church bells rings makes this poet discover the booming hope of reignited faith, the music of Christmas morning sparks his lost voice.
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Of all the holiday movies this one is an example of holiday classics. Not only is this a great film, but it is also often used as elementary school plays seen in gyms all across our country. It is Christmas.
If you have lived under a rock your whole life and don’t know the story, Charlie Brown’s choice of an unattractive tree for the holiday is initially made fun of by his friends, but Linus steps in just in time to help the genuine meaning of the season shine through. Everyone comes to the realization that a little love may go a long way, even in the case of a tree.
Our family started a Christmas Eve tradition when my children were very little. They would put sleeping bags out on the floor and watch A Charlie Brown Christmas before they fall asleep. Today my children are grown. My youngest is 17 and my oldest lives on her own. They still have this Christmas Eve tradition.
The Star
If you have a toddler and you are looking for a movie to watch this Christmas holiday, you have to watch this sweet movie about the Christmas star.
Bo is a little but courageous donkey, and he longs for a life outside of his routine at the community mill. He eventually finds the courage to break out and go out on the adventure of a lifetime. He joins Dave, a dove with lofty goals, and Ruth, a sweet sheep who has lost her herd.
Bo and his friends follow the Star of Christmas and wind up as part of the first Christmas miracle, the birth of baby Jesus the best Christmas gift the world ever received.
This is the story of Christmas from the perspective of the animals in the story.
Christmas Miracle
This movie has a hallmark feel to it, and I love it. I love these movies for the whole family that shows us the perfect gift is God’s grace.
A severe snowstorm forces several strangers to seek shelter in an abandoned church. The strangers depend on one another as the night goes on to get through the trying situation. This movie is a great way to remind us that we all need each other.
Angelas Christmas
If you are looking for a comical story for your family to watch at Christmas that shows Christian values, this is a great one your children will love. This is one you can see on Netflix.
Based on the children’s book “Angela and the Baby Jesus” by Frank McCourt, this film tells a comical, uplifting, and moving tale about the importance of family and a little child’s naïve want to make sure that everyone is happy, safe, and loved during the holiday season.
Angela loves her family members and in this heartwarming tale, we see her true love shine through.
Christmas Manger
This is the story of a man who had given up hope until a young woman came into his life. A foster daughter he had many years ago enters his life, along with her daughter, and reminds him of why he cares so much about life.
A Christmas Snow
Many people have memories from Christmas that are not pleasant. What do we do if Christmas is a time of pain and sadness? This is a movie I watched last year as I was putting up my Christmas tree. It was a good reminder to me to show grace to the people with less Christmas cheer than I had.
Not everyone has the perfect Christmas memories with a loving family opening gifts under the perfect Charismas tree.
In the movie A Christmas Snow we see Kathleen who has been haunted by the memory of her father leaving her and her mother on Christmas Eve for the past 30 years. This is why she now refuses to celebrate Christmas at all, blaming her mother for what happened that evening.
In the days before Christmas, Kathleen is trapped in her home with two strangers due to a blizzard. Sam, a kind older guy whom Kathleen hosted for the night, and Lucy, the daughter of her fiancé, force Kathleen to confront the wounds of her past.
A Match Made at Christmas
My all-time favorite type of Christmas movie is the romantic comedy Christmas movie. And this is one of those. My middle daughter loves these movies as well and so we love to curl up on the couch with a huge bowl of popcorn and watch. This is a perfect example of one of those movies.
Holly is a romantic small-town girl. Chris is a career-driven man. The two are opposites, which means in a romantic comedy they are the obvious fit. Holly’s lifelong goal is to find the perfect man, so she looks for Chris to help her… even though he despises Christmas.
This is a story of love, family, and honesty.
The Farmer and the Belle
This is another romantic comedy I watched with my daughter last year. It has everything you want in a romantic comedy at Christmas. A famous model returns to the house she grew up in and of course falls in love. This is a good movie to watch.
The small town might lose Santaland, and they need her to help save it. This will take a Christmas miracle. Will Santa Claus have a home and will the Christmas party mean second chances for the farmer and the model to fall in love?
Believe
I love my small town. And I am always looking for movies that show how great and important small-town communities are to our nation. In this movie, we see a small town looking to save the yearly Christmas pageant that was paid for by the Peyton family for years.
But as the town experiences financial difficulties Matthew is forced to choose between selling the family business and canceling the pageant. That is when Matthew meets Clarence, a young girl who believes in miracles.
The Chosen Story of the First Christmas
I love the Chosen series. They take the story from the gospels and show them in a different way. The series is produced by Dallas Jenkins.
In this great film, we see the story of Christmas through the eyes of Simon a shepherd with a disability.
Simon finds it difficult to keep up with his friends. He has been trying to understand the old prophecies about the promised Messiah who will bring relief and hope to his people. But God sees him and allows him to be the heart of the greatest event in history, the birth of Jesus Christ.
