When You Need God

Studying the Bible Together

in Commentary · June 23, 2022

The [REAL] meaning of Psalm 30:5? (Deep Dive) Commentary

The above bible verse assures every believer that every negative situation will last for a short while. The path of life will not always be smooth. There will be difficult times, temptations, and trials of many kinds.

Even the twelve disciples who were in a boat with Jesus experienced a raging storm that was about to overcome them but in the end, the storm was calm (Matthew 8:23-27). Life, they say, is not a bed of roses.

God is a loving Father who also disciplines whosoever He loves to restore the right relationship with them. They may often be products of our deviant actions, careless attitude, or foolish indifference toward God or others.

Proverbs 3:11-12 says, “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights”.

However, the chastisement of God is brief, it’s for a short time which is for our training and development. His anger or chastisement is not the uncontrolled human emotion, but righteous dissatisfaction at sin and rebellion.

This cannot be compared with the eternal weight of glory that awaits us in Christ as mentioned in II Corinthians 4:17 “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory”

Remember that everything will always work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

God’s discipline will always turn to our favour because His grace abides forever.

Who wrote Psalm 30:5 and when was it written?

The book of Psalm 30:5 was written by David. It was written at the dedication of the Holy temple about 200 years BC

What is the context of Psalm 30?

The context of Psalm 30 is about the acts of God and His loving kindness. David is known to be a man of praise. He gave thanks to God for victory over his enemies. He knew his security and position were the work of the Lord. Even though he was constantly confronted by his enemies, God always gave him victory over them.

David called on God when he was sick just as Hezekiah did (Isaiah 38:10-20) and he received his healing and his life was preserved.

In all of these, David knew all he enjoyed was a result of God’s mighty hand upon him and so he began to give testimony of the hand of God in his life by calling on God’s people to praise Him (Psalm 30:4).

David faced so many troubles in his life. In all his troubles, God was with him, heard his prayers, and rescued him. God loved David such that he became a man after God’s own heart but that did not stop Him from chastising him.

He knew His Father in heaven is loving and merciful. Hence, any discipline from God was for his growing up into His likeness. David gave God’s people more reasons for praising Him stating that God’s anger may be real but its temporary and His favour is for life.

David shared his testimony of many tearful nights, only to be gone by morning. All the disappointments he experienced were turned in his favour in the end. David acknowledged that his power and kingdom were not due to his prosperity, but the favour of God.

Hence, he became joyful for answers to his prayer by praising God for turning his mourning into dancing.

What is the message of Psalm 30:5?

The message of Psalm 30:5 is about assurance to every weeping believer that as they focus on God, He will bring joy once again to them.

Since it is in God‘s nature to give life, there will always be light at the end of the tunnel. This verse provides intuition into the promise of the resurrection of Jesus Christ and renewal that after our darkest nights there will be a shout of joy in the morning.

“Weeping may endure for a night’: but nights are not forever.” (Charles Spurgeon). Morning always follows night so it is certain that God will give comfort and pure joy to His people.

Joseph was sold into slavery by his family members (Genesis 37:18-36), accused wrongly, and imprisoned (Genesis 39:19-21). There were times it appeared he was down and out but his focus was on God.

The hands of his enemies were heavy upon him but he never gave up on such oppositions. He knew all he was passing through was for a moment because God was on His side and He came out victorious.

Sometimes things do go wrong but just keep reminding yourself that it’s only for a moment because the light of your affliction is but for a moment (II Corinthians 4:17).

God has great things prepared for us and He is always in control of everything in our lives. He is working behind the scenes on your behalf. It’s a matter of time, it will work in your favour.

Don’t give up. Trust in God for your victory is just around the corner. No night last forever, the sun will always rise.

“For His anger is but for a moment” meaning

‘For His anger is but for a moment” means God never loses sight and control of His loving purpose for creating us even when He is expressing His anger.

His discipline is momentary which He does in love. God’s anger does not mean that He is wicked, He desires that we repent of every act of disobedience against His perfect laws so we can enjoy eternal life in His kingdom.

“His favour is for life” meaning

“His favor is for life” means the duration of His favour towards us is everlasting.

God’s discipline arises from His favour. The favour of the father does not exclude suffering but it guarantees a living hope. God’s favour is found amid chastisement or indignation.

Nevertheless, have confidence in God’s favour and His ability to bring you the sweet taste of success all the time.

“Weeping may endure for a night” meaning

“Weeping may endure for a night” means your pain, affliction, mourning, and sadness are only temporary. They will not last forever.

It will not be long before they will all fade away. Weeping is a transitional moment of pain or grief that cannot be controlled. After a while, you will not need to cry anymore because morning will succeed night, and no night last forever.

This is God’s assurance of greater joy and consolation for faithful people. Therefore, every weeping believer must trust and keep the focus on God because He will bring you joy once again.

“But joy comes in the morning” meaning

“But joy comes in the morning” means no matter how long that darkest hour has been, your time of joy will be restored.

Although some nights may be long and dark, after calling on God for a way out, your joy will be restored. Other times, darkness can get worse but when you allow God to meet you in your pain, there will be a way out.

Life, they say is unfair. It is not comfortable, neither is it free of struggle or pain not even for the most faithful servant of God. But in our pain and confusion, God is always with us, working for our good.

No wonder Isaiah 43:2 tells us that “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you”

You may feel dejected or downcast at the moment. Not able to see any light. I have good news for you.

Job 7:7-9 tells us “For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease. Though its root grow old in the earth, and its stump die in the soil, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put out branches like a young plant.”  Stand firm in God and His word.

It will not be long before your mourning will be turned into dancing. True joy comes only from God, it’s a gift from Him. He is the only one that can enter our pain to give us everlasting joy.

What is the difference in biblical translations of Psalm 30:5 (NKJV, NIV & ESV)?

Psalm 30:5 NKJV biblical translation

“For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”

Psalm 30:5 KJV biblical translation

“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”

Psalm 30:5 NIV biblical translation

“For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning”

Psalm 30:5 ESV biblical translation

“ For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.”

There is no difference in the four translations between NKJV, KJV, NIV, and ESV

The four translations have the same meaning.

How do I apply Psalm 30:5 to my life?

Applying Psalm 30:5 to my life is constantly reminding myself daily that there is always a light of dawn at the end of the tunnel.  We serve a faithful God who will not allow us to be tempted more than we can bear.

Apostle Paul in II Corinthians 2:1 says, “But I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you in sorrow”   Our God is a God of comfort. When He reproves us for our sins, He does it for our good which lasts for a short while.

The morning will surely come if you are passing through a time of discipline. There is always an expiry date for every challenge.

Although, some things may seem difficult and impossible. Trust in God and His words. Keep honoring Him and His favour will shine through every difficulty.

Wait for it, it will not tarry.

What is Psalm 30:5 prayer?

Oh Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness and long suffering towards us. I appreciate You for Your presence in every pain I pass through. Assure me that every dark night of the soul is replaced with Your joy. In the day of my trouble, teach me to find rest in You

Heavenly Father, take away our garments of shame and sadness, clothe us with Your joy and let us experience Your favour that brings joy. This I pray through Christ Jesus’ Holy name. AMEN.

Conclusion

The first thing to do as believers is to find solace and hope in the promises of God in our moments of grieves, uncertainty, fear, and struggles.

God has good things reserved for us according to Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”

What a loving Father we have! His steadfast love never fails nor ceases.

For this reason, we must have confidence and rest in Him because He who has begun a good work will surely bring it to pass (Philippians 1:6)
