What is SOAP method?

The SOAP method stands for Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer. It’s a simple way to study the Bible that will help you understand and apply its teachings to your life.

To use the SOAP method, start by reading a passage of Scripture. Then, observe what you read and ask yourself what God is saying to you through that passage. Next, apply what you’ve learned to your life and pray for guidance.

The SOAP method’s procedure

Each time you read a scripture verse, follow this procedure. Remember to pray first, and ask God to show you what he wants to tell you today.

SCRIPTURE:

Read the scripture passage aloud, if possible, so that you can hear it as well as see it. It’s preferable if you can read a verse in multiple Bible versions because each has its own peculiarities. Concentrate on the one that connects with you the most.

Writing it down in your journal is a good idea. Written text activates parts of your brain that aren’t used when you read the text aloud or think about it.

OBSERVATION:

Make a list of your initial reactions, thoughts, questions, and observations under the verse.

  • What idea do you see standing out?
  • Are there any repeated words?
  • Who is the target audience?

APPLICATION:

Rewrite the verse, noting how it relates to your life. These questions can help you make it more clear:

  • What do you think God is trying to tell you through these verses?
  • How can you put what you’ve learned and written into practice?
  • What improvements do you need to make as a result of these words?
  • Is there anything specific you need to do today?

PRAYER:

You can pray out loud, silently in your brain, or in your journal. Thank God for the messages He has given you. Ask God to remind you when you forget and give you guidance to apply the message to your life.

Why SOAP method is good for you?

Because the SOAP method involves both your hands and your brain, it helps you remember the scripture better. When you read scripture aloud and write it down, you see and hear it, which makes it more likely that you’ll remember the information.

Getting observation and taking notes is a further important step that gives you time to absorb the teaching for God. Finally, applying the teaching to your life is the ultimate goal of Bible study.

So, slow down and take time to SOAP a verse of scripture when you study Bible.

Final thoughts

The SOAP method is a great way to get started in Bible study, but it’s also important to remember that Bible study is a lifelong journey. There’s no one right way to study the Bible, and you’ll continue to learn and grow as you read and study God’s Word.
