What is the role of a woman in the bible?

There are several bible verses that highlight the role of women in society. One good one is Proverbs 31 – this entire chapter talks about how women should take care of their families and even their servants.

It particularly talks about how good women wake up early to provide for their families and can even acquire property in their name.

Another bible verse that highlights the role of women is Titus 2:4-5. This verse talks about how older women should mentor younger women, especially about how to treat their husbands and children. It mentions matters of submission, self-control, purity, and kindness.

Bible verse about when a man finds a good woman

Proverbs 18:22 is the bible verse that talks about what happens when a man finds a good woman. It highlights how when a man finds and marries a good woman, he obtains God’s favor. This isn’t the only bible verse that talks about the importance of finding a good woman though.

Even Proverbs 31:10 talks about it. In fact, it takes things further by comparing a wife of noble character to a treasure more precious than rubies. Even Proverbs 12:4 reiterates this, citing that such a woman is an excellent wife and is the crown of her husband.

How to be a godly woman

No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, you can be a woman of God. And the bible has the blueprint you need to do this. It particularly highlights the characteristics of a godly woman, and we’re going to share them with you below.

The fear of the Lord

A good woman fears God and seeks him first before everything else. After all, Matthew 6:33-34 tells us that once you seek the kingdom of God, He will add everything else to you. This verse further advises believers to trust God with their lives and not constantly worry about tomorrow.

After all, Proverbs 9:10-11 tells us that the fear of the Lord not only comes with wisdom but can also lengthen your days. So if you want to live long and peacefully, you should start with fearing God.

A quiet spirit

If there’s one thing to be learned from 1 Peter 3:3-5, it’s that it’s more important for a woman to have a quiet spirit than it is for them to have outward beauty.

This means that working on your inner self is more important than adorning yourself with fine linen, hairstyles, and jewelry. Ultimately, the former gives you imperishable beauty.

After all, young men can even be moved toward God by the conduct of their wives – this is how the holy women of the past influenced their own husbands.

Ultimately, it is easier to convince people and get them to understand you by being gentle rather than combative. So whenever you have to choose between the two approaches, always go for the former.

Humility

Humility is an important quality in Christianity, for both men and women. In fact, the word of God is full of humble characters who were blessed because of it. These include Paul, David, Moses, and even Jesus Christ.

There are also standalone bible verses that encourage Christian women and men to be humble. A good example is Isaiah 66:2. This verse reminds us that God favors those that are humble and contrite in spirit.

Submission to their own husbands

One of the biggest characteristics of godly women is that they are submissive to their own husbands. As Ephesians 5:22-24 reminds us, the husband is the head of the wife just like Christ Jesus is the head of the church.

As such, you should submit to your husband the same way you submit to Jesus Christ as one of God’s people.

This doesn’t mean that you are less valuable than him though. It just means that you two have different roles to play in the family unit. He is the leader and you are the helper.

Willingness to serve

A good woman is a willing servant of the Lord. She keenly follows the advice of John 12:25-26, making sure she serves God above all men. Beyond that, she follows the example of Christ Jesus by serving others,

After all, Jesus reminded us again and again that he had come to serve not to dominate others. I mean, he even washed his disciples’ feet. It’s therefore not surprising that 1 Peter 4:10-11 encourages us to use our gifts to serve others and bring glory to the Lord God.

Love

Since God himself is love, he expects us to love others. In fact, you should mirror God’s love for you to others. This means that your love should manifest itself through kindness, patience, and protection of others – these are the qualities of true love as per 1 Corinthians 13:4-8.

It’s important to love yourself too though – it’s hard to love others when you can’t even love yourself. Ultimately, the ability to love God, one’s self, and others is one of the strongest markers of a good woman.

Diligence

If there’s one thing that we can learn from the creation story, it’s that God is industrious. As such, he expects us to be diligent as well, no matter what gender we belong to.

It’s therefore not surprising that there are several bible verses that cite diligence as one of the specific qualities of a woman of God. A popular one is Proverbs 31:27 – it talks about how a woman of God never eats the bread of idleness and consistently looks after the ways of her household.

Bible verses before and after this one further explain how much hard work such a woman puts in and even compare her to merchant ships – some mention that members of her household don’t lack winter clothes. Beyond that, the last verse in this chapter encourages us to give her the fruits of her hands.

Prudence

As Proverbs 19:14 teaches us, a prudent wife comes from God. Such a wife plans her daily tasks beforehand and approaches any issue with forethought. This woman is usually intentional with her speech and actions, setting herself up for future success.

Ultimately, having such a woman in your corner is always a good thing. She will push you to do more good works and achieve your goals.

Trustworthiness

This is undoubtedly one of the most integral qualities of godly women. It signals underlying values of persistence and consistency. It’s therefore not surprising that if such a woman is married, the heart of her husband trusts her, ensuring that she always gets what she needs (Proverbs 31:11).

This principle applies to family, platonic, and work relationships as well. The more trustworthy you are, the more people are willing to give you. Luke 16:10 reiterates this principle by reminding us that being faithful with little signals that you’ll be faithful with a lot.

Wisdom

Since we already know that the fear of the Lord comes with wisdom (Proverbs 9:10-11), we should not be surprised to learn that the godly woman is also a wise one.

According to Proverbs 14:1, such a wise woman builds her house with willing hands. On the other, a foolish woman takes down her house with her own hands.

As such, one of the simplest ways to figure out whether a woman is godly or not is to examine the fruit of her hands. If she frequently brings havoc and division wherever she goes, she’s probably not godly.

Another thing you can look at is what the woman talks about – a wise woman always has a teaching of kindness on her tongue.

Virtue

A  virtuous woman will not only do a lot of good works but will also exemplify values like patience and kindness. Since these are the fruits of the holy spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), they are usually found in godly women.

Ultimately, these virtuous women make great wives. Each one ensures to do good by her husband all the days of her life (Proverbs 31:12).

Willingness to teach others

One of the greatest characteristics of a good woman is that she is willing to teach and mentor others. That’s why Titus 2:4-5 emphasizes the importance of older women mentoring younger women on how to carry themselves, especially in their families.

This verse aims to remind the former to model pure conduct to the latter. It specifically talks about modeling the values of integrity and self control. As such, godly women usually like teaching and mentoring others as a service to God.

Selflessness

This is yet another important quality of a good Christian woman. It is actually a sign that the holy spirit is within you and is constantly working on your inner self. After all, Jesus Christ, the author, and perfecter of our faith was himself selfless.

It’s therefore not surprising that Philippians 2:3-5 warns us against doing things out of pure selfish ambition. Instead, it encourages us to consider the needs of others and not view ourselves as superior.

This is exactly what Christ Jesus did for us – he put aside his divinity and brought himself to our level so that he could save us.

Hospitality

One of the most appealing characteristics of godly women is that they are hospitable. As 1 Peter 4:9 tells us, God expects Christians to be hospitable to others without grumbling and complaining.

Even Proverbs 31 talks about the imperishable beauty of a woman who opens up her heart and home to others, especially those who are less fortunate.

After all, this is how Jesus Christ treated others. In fact, some of his most memorable miracles involved hospitality. For instance, the miracle where he multiplied loaves of bread and pieces of fish was all about him feeding his hungry followers.

Supportive behavior

A big part of being a good Christian woman is being supportive of other believers. That’s why it wasn’t surprising that Ruth decided to stay with Naomi and remain loyal to her even when she didn’t have to. This type of loyalty and support usually goes hand in hand with godliness.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should support destructive behavior. On the contrary, God expects you to correct others with love (Matthew 18:15-17). This means that you should correct them in private and not from a place of boasting.

Gratitude

Another important quality of godly women is gratitude. Even the apostle Paul addresses this in his first letter to the local church of Thessalonica – in chapter 5 verses 16 to 18, he tells them to constantly be grateful and pray. This advice isn’t only for women though – it applies to men as well.

As long as you’re a believer, God expects you to be grateful in all situations. After all, Paul and Silas even praised God when they were imprisoned, and God saved them because of it. Many times, the key to your salvation lies in your attitude.

Full of faith

If there’s one thing that most of the strong women of the bible have in common, it’s that they are full of faith. A good example is the woman with the issue of blood who followed Jesus Christ around and then touched his garment. She had so much faith that she believed doing so would heal her (Matthew 9:21).

Ultimately, this is the kind of faith that God wants all believers to have, men and women included.

Final thoughts

While there’s no such thing as an ideal woman, there is a blueprint for a good woman, and it’s found in the bible. Such a woman is more than just beautiful, she is also strong, virtuous, and wise. Ultimately, her character mirrors that of Jesus Christ.
