15 Bible Verses About a Mother’s Love for Her Child (Honor Her!)

There is no purer love on this earth than a mother’s love. This unconditional love is incomparable and is certainly without boundaries. A mother will go above and beyond for her kids, and although she may not be able to give them the world, she gives them her heart.

And so scattered throughout the Scriptures are stories of biblical mothers along with inspirational verses to remind children and the world of how deep a mother’s love flows. Let’s dig in!

What Does The Bible Say About a Mother’s Love For Her Children?

Mothers play a very important role in a family. One of their many roles is displaying what the Bible calls a “sacrificial love.” In fact, even God himself made a comparison between His love and that of a mother’s (Isaiah 66:13).

The special bond that she shares with her child connects them physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. Also, when a woman steps into motherhood, she is no longer responsible for herself, but she is now in charge of another human being, a fruit of the womb as the Psalmist said.

The Bible also encourages mothers to make time for their children and groom them to be godly women men of tomorrow. And in order to achieve this, it all starts from a relationship built on pure love.

Bible Verses About a Mother’s Love For Her Daughter.

Ruth 3:11-13 “11 And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character. 12 Although it is true that I am a guardian-redeemer of our family, there is another who is more closely related than I. 13 Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-redeemer, good; let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the Lord lives I will do it. Lie here until morning.”

The relationship between Ruth and her mother-in-law is one to be admired. We could see that Naomi loved her daughter-in-law so much that she wanted the best for her. I mean what mother wouldn’t want the best for her child?

This story also shows how much Ruth reciprocated this love, for example when she told Naomi “Don’t urge me to turn my back on you, wherever you go, I will go, your people will be my people, and let the Lord deal with me severely if even death separates us.”

The Bible shows us how each person impacted and supported the other positively. With God at the center of their relationship, it didn’t matter that they were not blood-related, Naomi loved Ruth regardless.

2 Timothy 1:5 “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

This verse shows that good morals can be passed down from one generation of mothers to another. It spoke of Timothy’s mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois and how both women knew what it took to grow their children in the Lord.

This is an example to all mothers that they should love their children enough to set them on the right path, so that they too can pass on these teachings to their children and the generations to follow. Show you love them by leaving a legacy of sincere faith.

Titus 2:3-5 “3Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good.  4so that they may encourage the young women to tenderly love their husbands and their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, makers of a home [where God is honored], good-natured, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.”

A mother’s love can also be demonstrated in many ways. And one of the main ways a mother can do this, as the Apostle Paul urges, is by setting a good example for her daughter by cultivating an environment of love.

And to note, mothers who are drunk on the temptation of this world, will not be able to love and guide their daughters the way they need to be.

And as second in command of the home, and as one who has one of the greatest impacts on the godly upbringing of her daughter,  a mother is supposed to teach what’s good to her so that she will become a Proverbs 31 woman.

Mothers should also strive to help their daughter step into her God-giving purpose and live a God-fearing life.

Bible Verses About a Mother’s Love For Her Son

Genesis 37:3-4 “3Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.”

Believe it or not, favoritism is not only seen in churches these days, but it exists in the home as well. This was demonstrated when it was obvious that Jacob (Israel) loved Joseph more than his other children.

Even though Joseph was seen as an outstanding son, favored by many, the favoritism of one child over the others was not healthy for the welfare of their family.

This type of love is not something godly mothers should practice because one, it causes rivalry in the home, and two, it is certainly not accepted in God’s Word.

And instead of grooming all the boys to be men of God, this will only divide them and send them in the hands of the devil. So mothers are encouraged to love each son equally no matter who outshines the other.

John 19:25 “Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.”

Mary’s love for her son was definitely one for the books. What mother would stand and see her child being crucified and not step in? It must have been so unbearable to watch. Still, she was there for him until his last breath.

This also must have meant so much to Jesus that his mother was there to comfort Him in his time of grief. Sometimes all a mother can do is just be there for them in their time of struggle.

Proverbs 1:8 “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching .”

One of the greatest blessings in life is to have a God-fearing mother who is focused on raising soldiers for God. There is no also no greater joy for Christian mothers than to hear that after all the lessons and guidance that they have given their children, that even when they have gone on their own, they’re still walking in the truth of Christ Jesus (3 John 1:4).

In the words of King Lemuel, it was his mother who taught him various lessons in life such as the traits of a virtuous woman. And Timothy being the man he was due to his godly upbringing surrounded by love.

The Godliness of a Mother’s Love For Her Child

1 Peter 4:8  “Above all, love each other deeply because love covers over a multitude of sins.”

As the saying goes “Love conquers all!” This love disciplines, but is not puffed up. It is patient, it’s kind and it protects. Once a mother fosters this type of love, her family can withstand a multitude of problems that they might face and find solutions together.

Proverbs 31:26-27 “26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

This verse paints a picture of a purposeful mother. A godly mother who is held in high esteem for her perfect love and for the wisdom she bestows to her family.

She can also be seen as a blessing and of great value to her household which is rightfully deserved because of all she does. And because she serves her children with love and kindness, she will forever earn God’s favor and her children’s gratitude.

Proverbs 22:6 “ Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

This is a message to all mothers, the Word of God says you are to train up a child in the right way so that when they are older they won’t forget their devotion to Christ.

This may not always be easy for mothers to do especially when their children are not receptive to the godly way of things. But if a mother loves her child, she will do her best to instill good teachings in her child and allow God to do the rest.

The world has every resource at hand to influence the mind of children, but a mother that stands up for righteousness and loves her children enough will grow them in the right way.

And this goes without saying that regardless of whether their child continues on the straight and narrow path or not, it doesn’t affect how much love they have for their children.

1 Timothy 2:15 “Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.”

What the apostle Paul was saying here is that although mothers now bear the pain of childbearing due to the “Fall”. And that it is only through their continued faith, and steadfast love that they can be saved.

A mother who portrays a godly influence on her darling children. And mothers are also encouraged “not to give up when they’re doing good, for a genuine faith produces good work,” (Galatians 6:9).

John 16:21 “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.”

Every mother knows the feeling of being in labor. The tears, the hurt, and the excruciating pains that accompany the delivery of their baby. However when she lays her eyes on her baby for the first time, all that is forgotten and replaced with joy and deep love.

Proverbs 17:6 “ Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.”

It is true that children do live what they learn, and as such it is important for a mother to show love for her children so that she can set a legacy for them to follow.

Her actions do have an impact on her children’s lives and so she is encouraged to be the kind of mother that they can emulate and be proud of.

Psalm 127:3 “Behold, children are a heritage and gift from the Lord, The fruit of the womb a reward.”

The Bible tells us that every child born is a blessing from God, and He knew exactly whose womb that child should be born from. As life bearers, mothers are connected to their children both emotionally and physically, and at times even spiritually.

It also helps that throughout their lives, a mother can show continuous love for their child. Additionally, it is God’s reward to you, a “good endowment,” as Leah said when she bore Jacob a sixth son (Genesis 30:19).

So mothers should always be grateful for this gift because for every mother who can bring forth a child, there are those that cannot, and so if you’re blessed to bear a child, you should be thankful and not take this blessing for granted.

The Protecting Love of a Mother For Her Child

1 Samuel 1:26-27 “And she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.”

A mother can demonstrate her love for her child by praying for them daily. Like Hannah, who was a God-fearing woman, mothers are encouraged to go on bended knees for their children, placing them in the hands of the lord so that they will be protected under his blood.

Hannah also understood the vow she had made to the Lord before she was conceived with Samuel and wanted to honor this promise. So saying that to say this, Christian mothers are to confidently go before the Lord on behalf of their children with love being the essence behind their prayers for them.

1 Kings 3:27 “Then the king answered and said, “Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means put him to death; she is his mother.”

The content of this verse was to show how much sacrifice a mother makes for her child. Here we are presented with a story of a King who had to make a ruling over which woman was the true mother of a child.

He wanted to use the wisdom of God and so he told the two ladies that he would cut the child in two so that each mother would get half of him. One mother was clearly okay with the idea of having half of the child, but what the other woman said, made the ruling easy for the king.

The king declared that this woman, who would rather give away her child than to see any harm done to him, was the true mother.

When a mother loves her child, she would give up her own life for them. There are also different ways in which a mother proves her love for her child, like working all day long tirelessly just to put food in their stomach.

Sometimes even goes without food herself just to make sure they have enough, along with providing a roof over their head. No mother that truly loves her child will want to see harm done to them and this love was proven in this verse, which is similar to what Moses’ mother did for him.

And just as an encouragement for all the mothers today, God sees all the sacrifices you have done for the well-being of your child and your selfless love for them will not be in vain.
